Contemplation in action

“ Contemplation in action in the service  of our brothers and sisters” is the spiritual synthesis, the heart of Elena da Persico’s spiritual insight.
She is the foundress of the Secular Institute “Daughters of the Queen of the Apostles” (Filiae Reginae Apostolorum). A very captivating synthesis  which enables to make every  moment, event, action a loving relationship with God. The expression “contemplation in action” written for the first time in Elena’s Diary in 1911, sums up the most profound desire of her life: to remain in loving contemplation of Our Lord Jesus, keeping a close intimacy with Him, even in the middle of her activity.
The relationship with our Lord  Jesus intensely lived urges to a renewed involvement in the reality of life. It transforms every daily action and makes it authentic.

In this perspective, every action expresses a particular way of living the relationship with God: it is an action carried out not only for Him but with Him so that contemplation becomes so profound that it is not interrupted even in the most exacting activity. On the contrary, in contemplation every action finds new impetus as it was for Mary in the mystery of the Visitation   and for Mary of Magdala when she obeyed to the Risen’s command “Go to the brothers” on Easter morning  (John 20:17).

Life in Christ is a “refuge” of peace and serenity, a “dwelling place” that does not distract from every day duties and activities; “strength” that does not take away pain and difficulties but allows us to carry them with love; “resting place”, a place of total surrender to Him. “Come to me all you who labour and are overburdened, and I will give you rest. Shoulder my yoke and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light”. (Mt 11: 28-30)

To live “contemplation in action” is, therefore, to link together the radical desire to follow our Lord with the active commitment in the world for justice and peace in the service of our brothers and sisters.
We learn that, in Jesus Christ, life can gradually become a real proclamation of the Gospel.

Thanks to Elena’s way of life  - which was new for the times in which she lived -  and to her firm position     “contemplation in action” in the service of mankind” has become the spiritual synthesis and the fundamental characteristic of the FRA, called to be, like her, a living visitation in the world.
